Well…, I am not quite sure if I felt happy after reading this report about J.P Morgan’s interest to contract an Afghan gold mine in Baghlan province. From one hand the level of corruption existing in the Karzai government raises doubts about any economic benefit the people might get from it, on the other hand, the whole thing reminds me of a classic American Gold Rush, which is not pleasant either.
However, starving to death while lying on a bed of gold is also unbearable. This country has always been corrupt, bribery is not an invention of Karzai, so let the Americans dig the golds up. As an Afghan proverb says “those who have fingers will eat the Halva”, this is the law of the land for the time being.
