Lars von Trier: I am a Nazi

Lars von Trier, one of my favorite film directors has just ruined his image in my mind. Today in a Cannes film festival press conference for his latest film Melancholia he has said:

I really wanted to be a Jew and then I found out I was really a Nazi which also gave me some pleasure. What can I say, I understand Hitler. I think he did his wrong things…but I understand the man. He’s not what you would call a good guy but I understand him, I sympathize with him… I’m not against the Jews. I am of course very much for the Jews. How can I get out of this sentence, ok I’m a Nazi.

The Danish star director then apologized for his remarks saying he is not anti-semitic, nor he is a Nazi.

When the people in the room felt uncomfortable with his comments, he attempted to jokingly talk even more about being a Nazi to reduce the damage of his earlier speech. Apparently it didn’t work and no one laughed.

There are two possibilities, either we can’t get the Danish sense of humor, or the man is right, he is a Nazi. Very disappointing from the director of Dancer in the Dark (2000) and The Anti-Christ (2009).
